As mentioned in one of the strips a few weeks ago, I'd obtained a mind-numbing government job working for the 2010 Census.

It was nice receiving a regular paycheck (a new experience for an artist, I'll say that much) but all the forms, red tape, and just general office malaise was enough to cramp my creative spirits for a bit. So no more government paycheck.

Now I'm back to focusing on my class projects pretty much full time. How am I going to continue to pay for schooling without my government job? Simple...

Repetitive and Mind-numbing

Occasionally I do some freelance work on the side for a couple of reasons. (1) I get to practice having real life clientele on real life paid projects, which is great for experience and exposure, and (2) I get some extra money to spend on frivolous things like rent and tuition.

But lately, it's been such a hassle I feel my schoolwork is suffering. I stay up late into the night working on last minute changes for someone's logo and put way more time into the project than what I'm getting paid for. I need to find a side job that is just repetitive and mind-numbing. Repetitive and mind-numbing. Maybe I'll get a government job. :P

I've got this one instructor, for my Illustration class, who never lets up. He is one of the toughest teachers I've ever had, and he bugs me to no end. It seems like he is never satisfied with my work, no matter how hard I try.

Of course, in the end, I've ended up creating some of my best work in that class. So I guess he knows what he's doing. You could look at it that that's why I'm going to this school in the first place. He's an art master, and even though he's tough on me he's teaching me the way. He's like my Illustration Mr. Miyagi.

But sometimes I can't shake the feeling that I'm just paying exorbitant amounts of tuition money to have an old man ridicule my work, y'know?

I'm so excited for our winter break! I'm going to use some of this extra time off to work on some of my OWN digital artwork. It's a rather strange phenomenon about how artists will work all day on artwork for a class or for a job, and then the moment they get some free time they go and do more of the same for their own projects. Does that sound a little insane to anyone else?

One of life's simple pleasures is when you meet someone who "speaks your language." That is, they know all about your field of interest, and even the jargon that goes along with it. I'm amazed at how excited I become knowing I'm talking to a fellow 3D artist (so long as said 3D artist isn't Max, he's sort of a bonehead). In fact, for all you fans out there, here's an exercise. See if you can define these 3D terms without Googling.

- Inverse Kinematics
- Sphere

Dear Reader: You're Not Going to be Happy About This

I posted a blog earlier this week about the joys and frustrations of side work, and it ended up being pretty funny. I've since deleted that blog and converted it into a script for an upcoming strip that will air once all the previous strips are brought out of the archives. So now instead of getting a funny and entertaining blog, you get a blog about a funny and entertaining blog that got deleted.

You so got gipped.

Proverbial Poverty

So as you can tell from my blog postings (or lack thereof), I've been really busy. My classes keep me busy for sure, but I've also taken on some side work to bolster my resume and get a little extra cash. We all know students are typically poor, and if you combine that with the proverbial "starving artist," well you can just imagine how much money an art student doesn't have. =P

Back to School

Now that summer is wrapping up, it's back to school for me and Max. I know I know, we've been going to school for well over 4 years now, which means we must be going for our doctorate in Media Arts or something. I jokingly told Max that he's going for his PHD, which he thought stood for "PHotoshop Doc."

Knowing Max he'll probably end up creating his own fake diploma in Photoshop. His will have the only Sun Flare in this year's graduating class. *rolls eyes*
